Can you put bottle dividers in there or are they necessary?

We used ours for the can 12 pack containers. I imagine you could put the bottle dividers in them as the shelving is slotted, so the bottles would tip over when you stand them up. Or, get the heavy duty shelf liner and that should eliminate the problem of tipping bottles.
