An Introduction to Hnefatafl

I read and enjoyed Damian Walker’s other book “Reconstructing Hnefatafl” and highly recommend it to anyone interested in this ancient and noble game. This book is a quick must read for all hnefatafl enthusiast and especially beginners. The writing style has a nice pace and cadence for an afternoon read that is different than “Reconstructing Hnefatafl” which seems more academic in it’s approach to the subject. There is precious little information out there about this European predecessor to chess – Damian Walker has done an outstanding job of putting a great deal of what is available together and both of these books should have a place on your bookshelf.Vern PhillipsNeversummer Chalet

The perfect compliment to Walker's Historic Board Games and Reconstructing Hnefatafl, this intelligent, enjoyable work examines the history of this Scandinavian game and the strategy involved in winning consistently. With an analysis of rules and historical context, this book provides a great guide to this fun game... come on, app developers, where is my Hnefatafle with Friends?

There is very little in this book, you are better off looking on Google or the like for better information.

Good introduction to the game

Bought this as a present for my son. The game arrived in excellent condition. The game is very fun and challenging. We are really happy with our purchase.

A very readable canter through the history of Hnefatafl and its many variants, ranging from Norse burials to Irish lakes and… uhhhh… a James Bond version? Top stuff, but light on strategy even though there are many links for further reading. Recommended.

I will certainly need this to explain how to play and learn a little history of the game. 😀
