Will these speakers work as the rear speakers in a sound-surround system, or are these just for "ambient" sound, i.e., background listening music?

They can work as rear speakers in a surround sound system. I use the playbar for my front 3 channels, the subwoofer for the .1 and have these connected to the Sonos amp for my rear. For Dolby Digital content they work as surrounds. For stereo sound(music) I have them set to play the same as the playbar to fill the room more.

If i want to use a lot of these speakers in all my house how can i do it?, i mean like 2 in the kitchen, 4 in the living room, 2 in each of the rooms

Each amp and connected speakers are assigned to a specific group. If an amp is connected to a set of speakers in your kitchen and in your livingroom, you can’t isolate either room. If you want to isolate music in just your kitchen or just your livingroom, then you’ll need to run separate amps. If you’re wanting to run 2 in the kitchen and 2 in each of the two rooms, the amp can run three pairs wired in parallel but all three sets will play at the same time at the same volume. For the livingroom, you can get a set of “Sonos 5’s” which may sound better than two sets on sonance in ceiling. Just pair the “5’s” with your Sonos Arc (or Beam) and a Sonos sub (or two subs) and you’ll have amazing sound. You’ll be able to run music throughout the entire system (livingroom group & kitchen/bedroom groups) or you can run 5.1 (or 5.2) for home theater in just your livingroom group.

If the speakers have to be hard wired to an amp, where do you hide the amp?

If you are hard wiring your system like a typical surround sound, then the amp will reside where the wiring terminates (ends). Idk your room setup but in a media console or whatever you like. Most likely near the television and somewhere with available wifi.

Good if your interior is already Sonos

Perfect if you have a Sonos echo system and use an Amp. Very expensive if you do not.
