Very few facts, but great for teenagers to read and look at the world history at a different angle

Fabulous book. The huge swath of history covered, and the way he segues between seemingly disconnected periods/areas/empires/etc. is so fun and exciting. I found myself highlighting almost every page!

Buyer be aware! I wanted a hardcover copy of the "grown-up" edition of this excellent work, and inadvertently purchased the children's (hardcover) illustrated version. This is entirely my fault for not being more careful in reading the description, but I am a professional in the field, so if I can make the error I think it's likely that other people can, too. For the record, I don't at all regret the purchase - if I don't give this copy to some lucky child I will keep it in my permanent collection because it's beautiful and of high quality - and I will buy the hardcover adult edition *in addition* to this; it's such a fine and thorough piece of research and writing that anyone who's interested in East/West history should read it - but unless you're in the market for multiple editions, be alert to which version you're buying!

This is a great book! I have been meaning to read the unabridged version for so long but this gave all the good bits and and some great artwork a pleasure to spend an afternoon with! More please

I ordered this thinking that this would be an illustrated version of the full text of Frankopan's Silk Roads. But it isn't. It is so heavily abridged it's more like the "Look inside" feature on Amazon than an actual book. Whilst nice to look at with all the pretty illustrations there is barely any content. Had I looked at the number of pages in this book vs the paperback full version (128 vs 600+) I guess I would have realised this sooner! In this format it could pass as a quirky coffee table book or maybe even a children's book. I am very disappointed.
