Q: Do you have to worry about the wax drying out if you dont burn the whole thing right away?

No, it doesn't dry out. It's natural bees wax. I love mine!

Q: Does it set off smoke detector?

As far as I know mine never set off my fire detector and the best part of this is that you can burn only what you want to burn and that is the nice part because it goes out when it reaches the end where you set it to do so. Hope this helps you out.

Q: have the packaging issues been resolved? Or should I shop for another?

I haven’t had any problem with my candle or the packaging

Q: Does it blow out easy if brought outside?

I haven't used it outside. I imagine it would respond the same as any candle; if windy, it would probably go out
