I bought this to Melt down scrap silver jewellery and so far am very happy with its performance. The build quality is very good, with thick stainless steel walls.I was quite impressed with how well the kiln was packaged. There’s very little chance, even with poor shipping handling, for the contents to get damaged in transit.I used 2 LPG (Propane) torches to heat the kiln and had no problems melting the silver. After 4 melts I’ve got these observations.- The kiln heats up quickly, helped by the compact size- The refractory material seems to be holding up well, but with any furnace this material deteriorates over time. Repairing any wear and tear is easily done with a top coat of refractory mortar from the local hardware store.- Instructions are fairly straight forward.- When using the kiln on hot melts, I’d suggest rotating the crucible during melts, so you don’t get hot spots on the crucible, as this can cause damage to the graphite walls.- When inserting the torches, try and angle them so the flames enter the kiln towards the sides, not straight in towards the crucible. This will disperse the heat around the crucible rather than concentrate heat in one spot.- This is a compact kiln, perfect for my needs. Just make sure to check the measurements of the kiln first, so you know what size you’re ordering.
