can i independently run this osd without a Flight Controller? for example just for voltage monitoring

This needs a flight controller. But if your using a FrSky Taranis 9xd plus transmitter with a telemetry receiver , FrSky makes a volt sensor that will tell (voice) you your voltage through the Taranis without you having to look at your osd. i have my Taranis tell me everything so i just have to concentrate on flying , especially during a race.

Does it comes pre-shipped with the bootloader? thx

It does. If you have failed to connet to bootloader issues double check your ftdi is 5v, double check your wiring, swap tx and rx on one side, try different jumper cables between your ftdi and the osd. Mine came with one bad jumper wire and I happened to hook it up to the tx from my ftdi, so the osd would light up, and the ftdi would reset it, but the data never got across on that pin. Took me hours to troubleshoot and it just ended up being one stupid bad jumper wire. There's also an issue with ftdi adapters getting bricked if they aren't genuine ftdi chips. Google that too.

I purchased two of these, and just get a failed to talk to bootloader error when i try to read from ng onfig.exe tool. using a 6pin ftdi. ideas?

It has to be a 5V USB to UART device. If it’s 3.3V - it may or may not work. Following the directions in readme.md (open with notepad or notepad++) to the letter. The directions on github are terribly convoluted. You must upload the new character set firmware FIRST, then you can upload the new firmware. The original FW doesn’t have the correct bootloader to work with NG it would seem.

is this compatible with mini pix controller?

If it is the PX4 flight controller,it will be compatible,but you should use the correct cable or change the connector to 5 Pin for connection,the connector to apm and px4 is different,like the connector of GPS.
