Was looking at these for a while and finally decided to pick one up. I love it! Very easy to use. Bikes can be put on or taken off in seconds. I really like the fact that you can lock the arms down with a padlock....just make sure the lock just barely fits through the hole. I bought the masterlock 131 set on the advice of an earlier review and THOSE ONLY WORK FOR THE HITCH PIN to lock the rack into your hitch reciever. If the lock on the arm is too small, you can still squeeze the release in far enough to move the arms up and down(no point in wasting the money for a lock in that case). For locking the arms down onto the bikes, I found that the masterlock 141 works perfect once you run a drill bit through the hole. It almost fits already but is maybe a millimeter off. Just find a bit that is the same size as the hole and run it through a couple of times to smooth the metal inside and the lock will fit perfectly. I bought a 3 lock set so that all the locks will work with a single key. I needed the third because I own a jeep and with the spare tire in the way I had to add a hitch extension to get the inside bike away from the tire. That defeats the idea of using a lock on the hitch pin. I just use a cable and the third lock to lock the rack to the hitch. I bought the hitch extension here on Amazon as well (Advantage Hitch Extension for bicycle racks). Works great and also has the anti wobble setup just like the rack. Thought it might add some movement, but the rack seems just as solid as it did without it. The rack will work without it, but with the spare tire so close, you have to remove the pedal closest to the vehicle. So, if you're looking for a really simple and convenient bike rack, and you have a reciever for a hitch on your car or truck, this is the best I've found.....even bought a second one for my girlfriend (so I could keep mine).

Let me begin by writing that I've been a Thule guy for decades. This XTC2 replaces a Thule Apex hanging bike rack that rapidly became impractical for mounting an MTB. Constant blow-back in the wind at high speed etc etc. Based upon recommendations from fellow cyclists, I was urged to get a platform rack. Having researched them for weeks and not being independently wealthy, I decided to get the Swagman rather than Thule. This unit does not disappoint! Assembly was easy but I suggest using an Allen key socket on a ratchet to get better and complete torque on the two bolts that mount the rack to the tongue. Wheel cradle and top hook placement took a bit to figure out as I have two bikes (one road and one MTB) with different top bar styles and wheel bases. That said, you set them and forget them. Placement on the car back from the bumper is a few inches more than the previous Thule but no biggie if you remember the rack is back there. You can see the upright post in the mirror. It does not wiggle any more or less than the Thule. I can open my trunk without difficulty even with the wheel cradles folded up. Mounting the bikes takes seconds rather than minutes and I no longer need to use a preponderance of bungee cords or straps to prevent sway or blow back. If you're concerned about theft, buy the Swagman threaded lock pin like I did to keep midnight shoppers from helping themselves. As for the bikes, I added a Master 6 foot coated locking cable (available on Amazon) to secure them to the rack should a post-ride visit to the pub be required. Bottom line ... A great rack, a great design, and an economical well made product from a CANADIAN company !

This a great bike carrier. Assembly is pretty easy, though I was glad to have read a previous review to have some idea of what to do with the two little screws that were left over and not mentioned in the directions at all. They go on the bottom side of the carrier, I think to secure the little plastic caps on the ends of the horizontal rail. Another reviewer also mentioned something about the ratcheting arms and one being longer than the other and that it mattered which order you put them on. That made sense to me once I tried to put a bike on the carrier and I have to switch them around. Don't worry, you'll figure it out if you did it wrong and it is easy enough to switch them around. The longer arm goes on first. The carrier went right into my 1 1/4 receiver with no problems. I find that I have to pull the carrier out just a tad from fully inserted to line up the holes for the pin. The threaded hitch pin is sort of a pain to get screwed in, but it does do a great job of getting the carrier secure and as wobble-less as possible. I used a ratcheting socket wrench to fasten it. Soon after I got the carrier I ordered the Swagman locking hitch pin so that I could leave the carrier on my car without worrying about theft. It is not extremely quick and easy to get the carrier on and off the car, so I wouldn't plan to be doing it everyday. Since the top arm folds down, you can leave it on your vehicle (without bikes) and still open a back hatch or trunk. I have the carrier on a Mazda 5 van and with the top arm folded down, my back door opens just fine. Getting bikes on and off the carrier couldn't be easier. Once you adjust the wheel loops to the right distance for your bikes, it is as easy as setting your bike in them, pull the straps through the wheels and bring the top arm down tight on the top tube. Just make sure your wheels are resting in the loops equally and you get the top tube of the bike up in that arm loop. I have taken my aluminum frame road bike out on the carrier a couple of times so far and it works great- the carrier does rock back and forth some, but not excessively. The bike feels really secure. I really like how quick and easy it is to get my bike on this carrier, as I have used it to take my bike halfway to work and then bike the rest of the way. I'm usually rushing to get to work on time, and I'm glad that I don't have to take extra time to mess with getting my bike on or off the car with a lot of straps or anything else. I also feel that it holds my new expensive bike securely and I'm not worried about banging up my bike or my car or causing an accident.
