Q: Does it also spin on other surfaces? ( I would like to "turn off" the rotation at will - even without sunlight).

Since the rotation of of globes come from within the inner shell, they would spin on virtually any surface. However, as long as there is some form of ambient lighting present, there would be no way to turn off the globes rotation.

Q: what is the difference between a political and relief globe?

It's the coloring of the globe. Political is the multicolored bright blue globe outlining the political borders of each country. The relief is more brown, tan and sepia (think old world) and shows mountains ranges and ocean currents. Just as an FYI, these globes are great for about 2-3 years and then they stop spinning. Fun while they last but whatever is inside that keeps them going by the daylight burns out eventually. Hope that helps!

Q: how is this globe fixed when it stops rotating?

We have a couple of tips that may help with a non-spinning globe! 1.Try placing the globe directly under a lamp to make sure it has enough light. 2.Move your MOVA Globe away from other MOVA Globes, iron objects, and surfaces, or any electronics. Since there is a magnet inside the globe, these items tend to interfere with the globe's rotation. 3.Place your globe in various locations to make sure nothing in the room or building is interfering with Earth's magnetic field. This could mean moving your globe from your bedroom to the living room or from your house to your office. 4.Try setting a paperclip on top of the globe for about an hour. The paperclip will interact with the globe's inner magnet and give it a "boost" if it is in an environment where the magnetic field is weak. If the paperclip doesn't "catch" with the globe's magnet and the globe doesn't start spinning while the paperclip is on top, a replacement may be needed.
