is this doll free standing? or can it only be played with by holding it?

It comes with a wooden stand that holds it up. The doll will just slide into the stand.

Will a 5 year old like this or is it more for a younger child?

Just like with most toys kids can tire of them. My 5 yr old granddaughter just gives hers to me (that I gave her 2yrs ago - ha) for my daycare. I have 2 and 4 yr old girls that like to play with them.

Can these stick to the refrigerator without falling off?

No. Only the front of the dolls are magnetized. The back of the dresses and accessories are magnetized to stick to the dolls.

Would this toy be appropriate for an 8 or 9 year old girl?

I bought it for my 4 year old granddaughter who loves Disney princesses . She enjoys dressing them in their various outfits, as I do too. Being she's so young she wants me to play with her .I think if an 8 or 9 year old feels the same and loves dolls , they should enjoy it. And at that age they will be more independent with their play.
