Q: how tall is the piece all together? is it tall enough for longer necklaces?

Good for about a 16 in chain but the longer necklaces you need to double to fit. Its pretty however my side doors to do not shut came this way and I would not have bought it had I known this

Q: Can it hold small stud earrings?

I put the small stud earrings in the top holes. When you put the backs on the earring it will hold the earring in place. If the stud is large enough that it does not go through the hole there should not be a problem.

Q: can this close with earrings on it?

Yes! I have lots of different kinds of earrings on it and it closes up completely. Its a great organizer and space saver
