Do the original Fashion Plates (from the late '70's/early '80's) work with this? Are the plates the same size?

Yes, the plates are the exact same size....we mixed the old 1970's plates from our old set with the new ones...the clothes and the heads all line up..:)

Where can you get the expansion plates referenced on the box?

It looks like the expansion sets are coming out in May 2015At least, that's what their catalog said on their website Kahootztoys.com

Are the plates single- or double-sided?

They are double sided - one side is the outfit, the other side is a texture or pattern so you can make the clothing plaid or polka dots or a variety of other patterns.

The deluxe comes with a very convenient & well made carry case that holds everything neatly. The regular set comes with a cheap plastic tray that does not last very long. It is definitely worth a couple extra dollars to get the deluxe set with the carrying case.
