Is this product archival, or water based?

I'm not positive but it appears from my use to be water based. At least the product I've used was. I use it in mixed media with other water-based paint and always have to spray-fix the walnut ink stain or drawings before getting it wet or it will bleed.

does this product contain shellac?

No there is no shellac in Tom Norton's Walnut Ink. Tom uses lightfast pigments that will not fade. It is a water soluble ink that can be layered for darker tones or lifted to lighten.

Can it be used with fountain pens?

I would not put this ink in a fountain pen. My collection of fountain pens is pretty decent and only fountain pen friendly ink should be used in them. Unless you have very inexpensive ones you do not mind ruining. This ink is designed for dip pens and brushes as stated in the product description. An online art supply dealer states this ink is "not suitable for fountain pens".

Is it alcohol resistant when dry? Could it be used for line art that will be colored with alcohol markers (Copics)?

You can use it, but expect some bleeding around the edges unless you're using it over the top of the markers. I experimented with some alcohol with it on Bristol and hot press water color and both times it lifted when applied first. However it does make nice crisp lines when used with a nib over for linework.
