You deal one set of cards to everyone, the others choose one card they like for you, then you deal the next set and they again choose the card they like for you. As the dealer, you read one set of cards and put them in order of what you think about yourself and the others explain why they chose that card for you. This is done for both sets given to you. Then the others decide as a group which one will be your totem animal and quality. Point are given depending on where you put the person's card in your order.

Can you do this with only one person or is it better for a group activity? Wondering if I can use for individual therapy?

Hello! Thanks for your interest for Totem! It was initially designed with groups in mind but people are also using it to trigger discussion and stimulate reflexion in a one-on-one context. You can ask the person to select among the cards the strength (animal) or quality they see in themself or the ones they would like to develop for example. You can also ask the person to take the game home to use it with their family to have a positive (only) discussion about everyone's strengths and qualities... Will this help a child with ODD?

I think it would!!!! The antidote to ODD is a good relationship and this game is about building relationships! So absolutely! I’m a school counselor and just went to a conference on ODD behaviors.
