The brakes only operate when you pull up leaver or push down to apply hand brake if you don’t want the brakes you don’t need to use them

Will this fit through a 20inch doorway

No, with the handles it’s 23” wide. A normal doorframe is about 29”

Are you able to get over one step or two?

We have generally been very pleased with this ultra lightweight wheel chair. It is easy to store and and to carry for short distances. My wife's walking abilities have deteriorated and we have needed to use the chair on holiday and elsewhere but it is best suited to relatively flat surfaces. There is no specific leverage bar at the back of the chair and although we use the chair inside and outside I normally do not tackle a step bigger than a kerb stone from pavement to road and even then I look for the lowest kerb. Hope this is helpful.

Can you lock the brakes? and also - how well do the brakes work?

Yes you can there are brakes which are on the handles you use to push. Fab wheel chair my mum and I love it.only 2 things which one is just annoying and the other only minor issue. The clips that you put on for the foot rests to stay in situ are mot always easy to put in. Also there are no plates at the back of the wheel chair that you can put your foot on to assist going up small kerbs or ramps.
