Epic Programming Software fail
Edit: Heads-up folks; Chirp Next now supports this radio and it has become a dream to program(me). Since I am not reviewing Chirp here, the low score has to stand I'm afraid. I liked the small format squeeze in anywhere size of this radio and bought it on a whim. Mistake. I really miss a rotating tuning knob but that's how the manufacturer sees this radio being used. I can live without a rotary squelch and even a rotary volume, but not a tuning knob, but that's just me. The programming software downloaded from the manufacturer's website was non-functional, I had to download Moonraker UK's version to get a working example. I didn't like the rubber boot on the inappropriate modular mic. connector falling off more or less instantly. I especially disliked the software which is severely compromised in functionality. It has a batch edit function which seems to max out at 200 entries. On a 500 memory radio? Chopping and changing entry locations is next to impossible, so you are advised to leave gaps between small blocks of channels to allow later additions. I think I worked out how to copy and paste rows, but moving blocks? Nope. The power lead is captive and frankly underspecified. When it finds an active channel on a scan (which is at snail speed so you really don't want it fully populated with programmed channels) it doesn't matter what button I press whether on the front panel or the mic. it just goes back to the channel where it started scanning from. I have an idea to try keying the mic. to see whether that will let me use the scanned result channel, but is that any way to hold the scan? The radio was bought from the self-styled "World's Favourite Ham Store" who sneered at my objection to the OOTB mic. lead boot detachment. They also advertised it as being sold pre-programmed, but I had to return it for that to be done. Then the programming they installed had so many missing channels (including their own repeater ...) that I was dumbfounded. Take note that even after a couple of years CHIRP still does not support this radio. Even RT Systems who will cheerfully gouge you three times the cost of a Baofeng for its software and wants you to buy again if you upgrade from an FT817 to an FT 818- even they don't support it. Beats me why I gave it two stars. I did manage one contact on the thing, perhaps I'll try again. Useable to a degree, but basically a missed opportunity due to the software. Paperweight.
