how painful is it? worried about visitors accidentally touching it

It's not extremely painful but I wouldn't play with it. My adult son thought he would be funny and grabbed it right after I installed it... Obviously we got a good laugh out of it. This last weekend as I was mowing the lawn, I had work gloves and thought I would lift it up to mow along the fence line... It zapped me through my glove. I then ran into it with my bare leg turning away from it. It does let you know it is there!

it this strong enough to keep out coyotes?

Yes. The current is sufficient to deter any small (under 150#) animal. Imagine sticking a fork in a household plug. That's the amount of electricity going thru the wire.

The image depicts the hot wire going directly the fence wire mounted on metal poles. This will not work, so why is it pictured?

Ok.... if you know that this is not how it works... why dont you explain that the ground wire is the one that goes on the fence? And tell people that if you do not know how to install this, do not try to install this... wait, no need, I just did it. For all others reading this. Please note that this is not a question and you should never follow any pictures that products have for advertisements. If you do not know know how to install something, please do not be proud and get someone that knows how.
