Extinction: The G.M.O. Chronicles 3D ( Extinction ) (3D) [ Blu-Ray, Reg.A/B/C Import - Germany ]

I say zombie, but I guess these mutants are just zombie like. The virus in this one causes mutations, and while the first round of creatures is slow and stupid, the virus constantly evolves, creating new, more terrifying mutants that are all intent on killing and eating their victims. Tom is one of very few survivors immune to this virus, though he thinks he's all alone, and then he meets other survivors during a scavenge/reconnaissance. Predictably, the pretty girl, her boyfriend you can smell an expiration date on, and her US intelligence agent dad who knows exactly how all this happened. From here, the film moves along a little slowly. People lost, people found, mutants battled, a little inner group chafing, unexpected problems, a glimmer of hope, you know, the usual for this kind of film. The acting is not particularly stellar, either, but the characters are written well, so that you do like/dislike all the right ones, and I really like the monsters too. They tried to cover a lot of ground in the plot which makes me think this would make a much better series. The ending felt more like a season one finale than a real end.

I love the way "Extinction: The G.M.O. Chronicles" starts out - making a phone call while driving, a man suddenly hits a person who darts out into the street. When going to help her, she attacks him. He escapes, but very quickly, notices violent mayhem all over the place. "WTF" is written all over his face. It reminded me of the early scene in the 2004 reboot of "Dawn of the Dead," when Ana, after escaping her husband, is shocked by the insanely violent chaos which has broken out all over her neighborhood. Although on a much smaller scale in this film, it's still effective. After that, it slows down to become a serious, somber character study about a variety of survivors who gradually discover each other & band together to stay alive. It will be too slow for those who are expecting intense action horror & gore. There is some, but I doubt it will excite the adrenaline junkies. It is primarily a bleak film, sprinkled with glimmers of hope, yet no humor, intentional or not. The situation & characters are interesting. It's the kind of film that makes me wonder what I'd do in such a situation. I love movies that involve my mind. Several characters are dealing with their pasts, as well as their losses from the outbreak & the stress of bleak survival. The main character is particularly appealing. Even though it's an overdubbed German film, it's well acted by both the original cast & the overdub actors, so even though the mouths don't match the words, it works well enough. The cinematography is well done, emphasizing the grim circumstances. Most of the CGI is obvious & not very good, & the zombie makeup is mostly very poor, but I can forgive those things. The editing doesn't linger on those shortcomings, & because I'm not a nit-picker, it's not a big problem. I enjoyed the soundtrack, as well. I noticed a few scenes that are similar to some I've seen in other zombie flicks, but that, I think, is to be expected in such a heavily saturated genre. This is not a great film nor would I expect it to gain cult status, however I might consider it among the top 100 zombie films. Considering how many there have been in the last decade alone, that ain't bad.

3 stars = you probably won't love it, but it's not a total waste of time either.Basic premise from 28 Days Later, Walking Dead, etc etc... survivors of a recent viral zombie apocalypse find each other and try to stay alive. Various interpersonal issues & secrets & accidents complicate things. This one doesn't try to be comedic or hit you over the head with some sociopolitical message, which is a nice change. It's not overly gory or violent (for a zombie movie, that is), and there really isn't even much in the way of jump scares.The acting is hit and miss (the heavier the accent, the better). Some of the action sequences are hard to follow - there's a particularly poorly lit fight scene near the end. On the other hand, the sense of emptiness and desolation is pretty well done. When everything comes together, you can feel the lonely dread.This is sort of an all-ages made-for-TV zombie film, extremely bland and unoriginal, but it's good enough to keep your interest and never bad enough to get frustrated with it. Ironically, it should be most satisfying to two opposite types of viewers: fans of the genre who just want a zombie movie they haven't seen yet, and non-fans who don't have much to compare it to.

The acting was well done for a low-budget flick. The thing that pains me most is the lack of firearms knowledge on a movie that centers around firearms for survival. Testing for the best "sniper" consists of setting up cans five meters away and using a scoped rifle (oh, where do I start with what's wrong with this). The obvious...you zero a rifle/scope from 100 meters (since they're in Europe), genius...but, I digress. It's worth a watch despite the usual lack of realism with military, police, and weapons as in every movie.

One of the goals I have set is to view any and all zombie movies available.This movie has a lot of talent put into it. The acting is fine, the camerawas handled well. The make-up effects were fine, and the gore action scenes werefor the most part computer generated. This movie was more like 28 Days Later thanNight of the Living Dead. A virus has mutated humanity into violent killers thatlook somewhat zombie-ish. We have a rag-tag group of survivors that are immuneto the virus and develop a plan to grow and be safe and secure from the mutants.When they travel and explore, they findmore survivors along the way. This is not a spoiler review. There is enoughplot to keep the story interesting. There is not a lot of zombie action, butthe story makes up for the difference. Much of the film is filmed at night orin dark buildings. (electricity is toast-it's a given!) Worth the $ to rent,and worth watching again. Enjoy!

I'm sure there could be plenty of debate, but to me a zombie movie requires a story to keep the interest going - too often you just see a group of people running around from one place to the next, constantly killing zombies and having their own numbers whittled down at a fair pace. 'Extinction' is different and does a great job of setting up and developing the story and characters and has the benefit of a 110 minute run time to do this. The characters are generally likeable and I found I did care about what happened to them. It's an ambitious story and possibly could have been made as a mini-series allowing more time to explain and explore - there are some points where I felt the story was being rushed. But we do find out what started the plague and there was a hint of what might happen to the human population at the end. In fact there are a number of possible directions the story could take. Some of the acting was great and some ordinary, and the zombie makeup was pretty good. There are lots of zombie kills, but if you're simply looking for a zombie massacre film, you might not like this.

Bought this as sounded quite good although disappointed after watching it. Its not really worth the money but is ok I guess if you have nothing else to do one night and just fancy watching something with no story and not many scary scenes. Its bearable at the end of the day.
