Don't hesitate! Get started!
As a novice veggie gardener what I really needed was someone knowledgeable who would stand by my shoulder and say things like "Now you'd be better off putting your beans over there...." or "Time to get your potatoes in..." To have all this PLUS a virtual adviser telling me how to cook my bounteous harvest is exactly what I get from this book. It's informative, concise and a great size for putting in my coat pocket while outside. Couple this with a great price and you have a winner. So if you, like me, have contented yourself to date with two courgette plants in a grow bag or a pot of chilis on the kitchen windowsill but would like to do more - go on! Take the plunge and get growing!Angie

Good, although marrow-free.
I've been sticking seeds into compost for a couple of years now and have no knowledge to hold me back from what I can and can't grow, so I sometimes find myself overwhelmed with plants not doing quite what I expect. There's useful information here that is light and enjoyable to read. Be warned though: there's no mention of marrows in it! I'm going to buy the River Cottage fruit book now.

The best veg gardening book ever
The best veg gardening book ever. I have a copy for myself and have bought this one for my sister who is getting into veg gardening. Its all about organic but the thing i like best about it is it actually inspires you to garden as well as being ultimately practical with guides on setting up your patch crop rotation when to plant and harvest stuff and all the details. Cant recommend this book enough. 5 years on I still use this all the time to plan my patch each year and try new things.

Fantastic buy
I have had an allotment for over a year now and have several different books on growing veg and i would have to say that this is the best book i own. Not only is the book itself made to a very high quality but the information inside is presented in a very freindly down to earth manner. Unlike a lot of books it gets straight to the point telling you the things that you need like when to plant, any common problems and when it's ready to harvest. It also suggests recipe ideals for each veg so no more worrys of what do i do with it know i've grown it!!!!

Essential info for gardeners
This book follows the thinking behind the RIVER COTTAGE television series. It provides practical information for the keen veg gardener and if you wish to grow for food rather than just a hobby it is very valuable. As an allotment owner and having had a poor year this year because of awful summer weather I will be using this book to help maximise my crops next season.Money well spent as veg from the allotment is money not spent at the green grocers so this book will pay for itself.

Everything I needed to know!
I liked that this book had the "bio" about the veg in a different place from the recipes. I was able to sit down and read it like a regular book. It has really broadened my veg horizons and I am looking forward to doing just as he says. The one thing I did find impractical is that he suggests four or five different kinds of the same thing, and he has the space to grow them. While I know that different kinds work better in different places, I wish he would say, "If you're only able to grow one kind of ___ THIS is the one."
