I loved it till it broke.
UpDate, at six years old the opener is finally shot. I suppose this is what you get these days something that lasts about that long and that is success. I took the arm apart today and I must say, despite the fact that it’s fairly robust the weather seal was not too good and I saw quite a bit of rust around the motor. It still functions but I doubt [if I was willing to still screw around with the circuit board and other problems] it would be good for more than a year or two. And I live in a very dry climate in California. So it’s built well but this is no lifetime deal. I suppose I will try ghost controls next. C’est la vie…8/8/17 Update on this review. It has now been at least three years since I installed this opener and it has worked flawlessly quietly and quickly every single time I have used it. Can't recommend it enough, one of the few bargains on a really high-quality piece of equipment.Original review...I have waited a while to write this review to see how the gate opener works over time. It has now been installed for four or five months and I have to say I am incredibly happy with it. I have suffered for the last 12 years dealing with three different Mighty Mule 500 gates. Everybody who's had an MM knows the story, they cost about 25% of a real pro style gate so people buy them, but they barely work. There always seems to be some issue. Mine would work for about six months and I would have to go out and fiddle with it to get it going. Ultimately the control board would go out and they would want to charge me $225 for a new control board. I stayed with it and got to be a semi expert in how to nurse along one of these awful gates. Finally in desperation I came upon this company on Amazon and decided to give it a try. Sorry if this review is overly long but getting this gate opener was kind of a big deal for me after being so frustrated with my previous experience. Another issue with the low cost of this unit. How could it be good at this price point? You get what you pay for right? Well in this case for once, you get way more than what you pay for. Here's what I have found out in my experience with this gate. 1) as soon as you take the control arm out of the box you will be impressed by its high quality looks and weight. As another reviewer has said it makes the mighty Mule control arm "look like a toy". It's all stainless steel with beautifully machined aluminum ends, nice. 3). This gate closes at least three times faster than my old gate, when I got it installed I opened and closed it five or six times just to enjoy watching how fast it was, and how quiet it was. Oh what joy.I hated waiting forever for the MM gate to grind away until it finally closed. 3) The control panel circuit board seems much simpler and smaller than the mighty Mule circuit. I am not an electronics person but I believe that it is a simpler system for several reasons. One being that the gate seems to stop closing at the limit of the extension arm rather then having to program the point at which the gate stops moving. The gate closes and stops when the arm is either fully extended or fully retracted depending on whether or not you have a push to open or pull to open gate. My old MM gate was constantly getting out of whack and not closing all the way which let the deer get into my yard and destroy my garden. The simpler operation may make the circuitry less buggy but it does make mounting the arm a little more crucial. However, the arm mounting hardware is not only very heavy duty 8th inch thick galvanized steel, it is very cleverly designed to easily reposition the base end of the gate closing arm so that it is simple to adjust the arm in such a way that the gate is closed when the arm stops moving. Hopefully I'm not making this sound more complicated than it is.The upshot of all this is that I am hoping The simplicity will make the board last longer and instead of charging $225-$250 for a complicated main circuit this company will replace the control board for $80 in the event that it fails. This was the first thing I checked for having blown through at least five MM control boards. 4) I can use the remote control from a distance at that is at least two times greater then with the old MM gate. It's wonderful to have the gate open when I arrive rather than waiting. 5) Jason was extremely responsive, ALWAYS contacting me within 24 hours and sometimes far less to answer questions with the installation. Good thing because the directions are somewhat sketchy.I am a reasonably competent person and was able to get thru the install in about four hours on my 14 foot long single opening four pipe gate. I wish I would've bought the 400 mm opener for a few more dollars for my long 14 foot gate. This shorter opener works fine but Jason told me the adjustments or little bit easier to make on a long gate with the longer control armCons I have two criticisms, this company makes what seems to be a relatively great product for very little money, they need to add to and improve the directions that come with the gate. Having said that, this gate opener is no more difficult to install then the MM, even with some confusion in the supplied directions. There is One other small criticism. And that is that due to a difference in the Hz standard for electricity in the US and Asia where these gates are made the gate itself hesitates and shifts into it slower speed, (it has two speeds), a bit before it needs to, thus slowing the closing and opening of the gate. It is still 3 times faster than my old gate. To sum up, I would not hesitate recommending this gate to anyone, in fact my friend and neighbor has just purchased one for his property.I really wanted to write an informative review because I believe there is a huge gap between what is available on the market in the $400 to $600 range and a $3000 to $5000 professionally installed system. At this point I am convinced that this company has provided a solution to that problem. We will see, but so far so good. I will update this review to reflect how this system works in the future. Stay tuned, and good luck gate wise!
