Is the smoke color a true grey? Light grey?

I bought the grey & would not consider it a light OR a dark but more "medium" grey. I think if you want a "grey", this would be the color to get.

Would this fit one of those clik clack futons?

It worked on my futon that cranks upward (I think that is what you are referring to). It fits over the top and back, you just can't zip it at the bottom.

how thick a mattress does it fit?

Quite think! Mine was 7" to 8" thick, and it fit quite well!Was very pleased with the cover. Size is more than adequate.
