It does NOT work by putting the spout on the plates. It turns out the depth of your battery (between top of the casing and the plates) can vary with model. The filler works when the moving ring is pushed back by the battery casing top (not on the plates). If you have the "right" geometry, the rising liquid level will shut off the water flow at the correct level. None of my batteries have the "right" geometry, so the carafe glug-glugs water and I have to periodically check the level while filling. My battery instructions say 1/4" below the filler tube; yours may differ?

It’s supposed to shut off when the water reaches the filler. Sounds like yours is defective.

How much space do you need above the batteries to use this? My batteries are in a compartment with about 5 inches of clearance above them.

Just hold it above the batteries, try to make a half or even quarter of a circle with your elbow while holding it in your hand.If your elbow is not touching any where , it should be okay. But 5 inches not enough.Why don't you measure the height and the base OD (you can use a caliber or just a measuring tape)Or just hold it in your hand (while empty) and just simulate the filling, if you don't hit any thing around, that means it okay, that is what I would do. I would make sure that, I have gloves and eye-glasses on. But 5 inches space is not enough.But, if I use additional materials (I have to make it myself) then, It would be possible to do it.

does the cap need to be removed to use.. ie to let it breath.

No! Removing the cap will disable the auto-stop function. Keep the caps tight while in use, only remove to refill the bottle.

Works GREAT!

So easy to use! Makes filling RV Battery banks a piece of cake! Having 4 Lead/Acid RV house batteries that have a total of 24 cells, it was a pain to check and refill with a pitcher and usually overfilling the cell. With this just insert nozzle into cell port and press down and hold. Fills cell to the same level every time, no spills, no drips. LOVE IT.

Good tool for those starting off at battery maintenance

I selected this tool to replace an older HD unit that I have had for over 40 years. Sadly the rubber ball eroded and I needed a replacement. I went with the best ratings I could find. Gave a 3 star as the 1st arrived with a manufacture defect on the lower seal causing air ingress. Same was replaced quickly by the supplier. Using the second one today I find the sealing fit of the top suction ball to the glass tube questionable and on a long term use, TBD. What I was unable to see was how small the actual electrolyte numbers are that I monitor. If you want a straight GOOD - FAIR - BAD indicator this will do. This is what you would expect for the cost.

Topped up my auxilliary batteries on my Sprinter van. Worked great. You will need about 8inches clearance above battery to get fill nozzle square on battery. Didn't overfill or drip. You dont really know when the battery is done filling unless you look frequently but if its quiet you can hear the bubbles stop venting back into the bottle when it is full.
