Sony BDP-S1700 in my case replaces a 2010 Toshiba BDX-1100 (which was a 120 Volts operated, region-switchable model). While the Sony BDP-S1700 is a 2016 model, the piece supplied nevertheless appears to be a fresh one, and comes with a nice, compact remote-control. The player is perhaps hardware modded to be region-switchable. The power supply unit is a separate (external) 12V SMPS wall-wart, which perhaps contributes to the player’s compact form-factor. The wall-wart can handle domestic voltages from across the world (=universal voltage adapter), eliminating the need for voltage converters. First thing that impresses is the player’s look. It is almost half the size of any regular sized bluray player, with minimalist looks (but larger than a Sony Discman). It has only two buttons on the front, power on/off and tray open/close. There is no front display. So, if someone wants to play audio CDs on it, the digital signal has to be routed through the TV via HDMI cable for the tracks and time to be displayed on the TV screen. There are no analog L-R sound outputs on the rear, though an SPDIF-coaxial output is provided. Please note that the bluray players that do not have analog L-R outputs, also usually do not have the capabilities to downmix multichannel audio (Dolby/DTS) to stereo (in case your audio system is 2.0/2.1, as is my case). In case of Sony BDP-S1700, should you require downmixing, it has to be done either by your TV or by your AV receiver, by leaving the audio settings on the bluray player at “Auto.” Once the correct settings are selected, the player’s video and audio capabilities are immaculate! The colours are natural yet vibrant, and noticeably better than my older Toshiba BDX1100. Sony BDP-S1700 comes only with basic networking features and an ethernet port. It has no wifi unlike its elder brother, the S3700. But if you want, you can connect the S1700 to a cheap wifi repeater that has an ethernet socket, to make it a wifi enabled bluray player. Please note that the BSP-S1700 is not 4K or 3D. It is just a basic bluray player, but damn good at what it does!

I have travelled across the world and have collected Blu Rays from every zone. All I wanted was a player that could play discs from across regions. It does that pretty well. The unit is very compact and in that sense, in the image, it seemed bigger. But, the biggest issue for me is that it does not support WiFi. So, you need an external connector I guess. It serves my needs well because I just wanted a player that could play all the discs that I have collected for nearly 15 years. It does not support Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos ... so please dont buy if you want to enjoy those formats.
