Can this be tuned, and how? I purchased 2 for my grandkids; one is in tune, the other sounds horrible.

You can download an app called Kalimba Tuner. I have a big Kalimba, that's what I use to tune it. I also have a Kalimba tuning hammer that came with my big one. I just searched for a kalimba tuning hammer here on Amazon and they have them. Hope this helps! :)

How loud is this? Would it be an too loud for a toddler on an airplane?

I would say no. If you think it’s a good idea to give a toddler something annoying on an airplane chances are there are plenty of other reasons people will be requesting to change seats.
