I want to use the solar panels on my rv and only use shore power when my solar panels can't keep up with electric demands. Will this work for me?

By default, it will prioritize the shore power over solar. You can install an assistant (Hub 1, I think) that will change that to prioritize solar and only use shore power when your battery drops below a certain level.

12/3000/120 - shore power breaker sizing - 30amp@120v breaker will work correct?

The breaker size depends on the load your boat requires. Our system is a 30amp system, using a Victron Multi plus 12/3000/120-50. Also make sure to program the Multiplus for a max AC input of 30 amps

Does this charge your car battery when driving?

What this question really asks: 1) Does this "intelligent" and expensive and "Swiss army knife" device know how to charge my battery when driving. Meaning, does it know how to detect alternator sourced DC power, ramp that DC up to 50amps or so, and direct that 50 amps toward the connected battery (bank). Now, this device knows how to "detect" 120VAC and then send that 120VAC to the 120VAC main out AND activate its internal 12VDC power to: 1A) Power a 12VDC accessory BUS connected to various fused accessories panel and 2B) provide a dedicated 12VDC out to your battery bank (unverified). The idea of using vehicle alternator to charge lithium batteries is incomplete. Because the alternator puts out certain amps toward the battery system looking for 12.8 volts or so charge. Then stops. Meanwhile any connected lithium batteries wanting to be charged to 14.8, and at a premium rate of 40+ amps, will be left wanting and charged to the alternator configured "car battery" spec of 12.8 or so. That is why a stand alone DC to DC charger is preferred to be used because it will not be limited by the alternator. The DC to DC charger "looks" like a (30-60 amp varies) accessory to the alternator will just continue to try to power it while it continues to charge your battery using its own detection system and massively increased amp output. So the question really is does this victron device use DC input, using a 1) standalone input from the alternator or vehicle 12 Volt DC system; or 2) does it only send DC output when connected to shore power. I don't believe that's the case, without reading the configuration specs of this device I believe it is a DC DC charger. That that DCDT charging capability kicks in when it senses it is not connected to 120 Volt AC shorepower. from the alternator to then charged the connected battery bank. I do not see how it would be able to do this being that the device appears to be connected to the battery bank buy only 1 Maine battery in and out plus and minus terminals. There would need to be a separate DC in from the alternator and are connected to the vehicles 12 Volt DC circuitry to then receive the alternating 12 Volt DC power from the engine to then drive the victron to output through a stand alone battery terminal to the battery bank (isolated from the vehicles 12 Volt DC system ) at a high rate of power needed to charge the battery bank from 30 to 60 amps etc. So on its surface this question seems simple, but what I believe is being asked here is can the victron detect AC to charge the battery yes, can the victron or does this victron have a separate input from vehicle alternator power to charge the batteries I'm not sure we'd have to look at the schematics or get direct answers from this forum.

For RV’s do you need a surge protector upstream to prevent damage?

I have a Progressive Industries HW50C Hardwired EMS Surge & Electrical Protection- 50 Amp mounted in my 5th wheel. It's ahead of everything downstream of my shore power. So it's shore power > Surge Protection > Inverter/charger > house panel. Separately I have solar going into a charge controller feeding the battery bank which also ties into the Inverter/charger. I leave my inverter on 24/7 but it only kicks in when the shore power dies and I do not need surge protection after my inverter as it's already line conditioning everything it receives.
