One of the best brands for SSD drives , underrated brand? = 5 yr warranty + tough drive.
Purchased while on sale. Like most people now I prefer the speed of a SSD drive , I use intel SSD drives for desktop builds and for macbooks. The speed of the 520 is just fine, quite good for the generation of its design .One reason I favor Intel brand is the 5 year warranty on all of the models they sell. No other SSD maker I am aware of has a OEM warranty 5 yrs long. For higher performance Intel models the Intel 730 model (skull printed on it) are very fast , including some of intel's enterprise internal parts. (a overclocked SSD) .. one of the highest rated for endurance/ constant 24/7 testing via some of the more popular websites like pcper. The 730 incorporating some of intels enterprise tech . In some ways benchmarks faster then its competitors of the same year/generation. The 730 model drives go on sale on semi regular basis making them very competitive in the cost per GB scale .The newest offering from intel the " 750 " model drives via PCI and SATA , very fast with a bit of sticker shock. :-)Included a picture of this intel 520 drive mounted with the Icy Dock I use for 2.5 " drives in desktops , with the correct install position.Icy Dock dual 2.5" mount URL: http://amzn.to/1ChggTY .Well worth the approx $14 for a tool less dual 2.5 mount dock system that is actually made from a steel frame ensuring it will last and survive being moved and mounted in various computers you own over the years. could also be used in a custom esata enclosure. .* I have seen pics online Icy Docks mounted incorrectly, why I included a picture of my 520, in dock. with spring load facing front of the case or front of drive cage .

The best solid state drive you can buy
Except for running a few bucks more than other drives, the 520 is the best drive you can buy. It utilizes the fast Sandforce controller in all the high speed drives, but Intel spent thousands of hours testing and optimizing the firmware for the drive until it had the same exceptional reliability the other intel SSD's have. Intel and Sandforce are maintaining that relationship so that buyers of the drive will continue to receive improvements in reliability and performance. What makes this drive a top contender? The type of memory used in this model SSD is better quality, higher performance and longer lasting. Further, Intel hand picks the best chips for these drives. So you have one of the fastest controllers, the best and fastest nand, great firmware and top reliability.I've seen a lot of good drives with bad firmware and bad customer service, that were released before they were ready. This is not one of those.Other good contenders are the samsung 830 and the crucial m4. Both use different but good controllers, solid firmware, excellent performance and reliability and while they're priced 15-25% higher than similar budget ssds, its worth the extra money. Unlike mechanical hard drives, a good SSD could still be useful in 5-7+ years. This drive will still be working then while the nand in the cheaper products will have reached or nearly reached the end of its lifespan.

They are good performing and reliable
I am currently using 3 of these at home and 2 at work, same drive and model. Of the 5, I've only had a slight issue with 1. Immediately after installation, I had one of these lose the boot sector. I rebuilt and have now been using it for over a year without any problem. They are good performing and reliable. I am using 2 in one computer in a raid 0 configuration and the performance is incredible. I also have one in my laptop and the speed is as amazing there. Boot time goes from a minute to less than 15 seconds. It amazes me every time I turn the computer on. This is probably one of the best upgrades I've ever made. I would definitely recommend this drive!

Great SSD
I love the intel 520 series. Stable and reliable, and it was priced right. I got it to replace a 5 1/2 year old intel 80GB X25-M boot drive that still works fine and has 96% of it's life left according to intel's SSD toolkit. Yes, you read that right, 96% life left after 5 1/2 years of daily use, and still fast. But after that long of a time I was running short on room for the OS and related utitlities and still have room for a big temp file for burning dvd's and blu-rays. So I decided to replace it with this 120GB drive that I got on a great sale. I also have a 250GB 520 for games and now I have added a 1TB Samsung 850 evo. Testing with samsung magician puts the intel 520 neck and neck with the 850 evo. Very satisfied with both brands, but I'm an old fart, so I still trust intel a bit more..Since the old X25-M still has so much life left, it is going to go in as a boot drive for an 8 year old core 2 duo e-8400 that still gets use once in a while and still holds up well with any software that doesn't require a quad core or better..

Review of the "Drive Only" version...
My computer is an hp laptop with core i3, 6gb ram, 5400 rpm hdd, and windows 8.1.I bought the 120 gb (Drive Only) and here are my thoughts:Pros: Like every other SSD...it's fast, lightweight, quite, and cool.Cons: These must be the surplus units from the factory in China and it clearly shows. The packaging was bare bones. The metal case of the drive was stained and smeared like someone cleaned it too hard and ended up half polishing the aluminum. No mention of the Intel Migration Software. No warranty information. No info about the product. Just the hard drive in a sealed bag and a big cheesy Intel sticker that looks like some nerd in middle school made. At least a simple website link would have been helpful but instead, I had to figure out myself, how to clone it for Windows 8.1**I recommend paying a little more for the "Retail Version" so you know that you're getting a full warranty. Also, it makes the un-boxing/installing experience much more pleasant.**If you get an error message, while the software reboots, that says "failed to find" 1) open the Intel software again 2)create a boot disk on a USB 3)then run the clone software 4) let it reboot again 5)wait for the error message again 6)manually find the boot file 7)then you should be able to clone it 8)replace the hard drive.

The media could not be loaded.
