Great item!
I have a marble mortar and pestle but this one is amazing! A tad smaller then I thought it would be but easy to use, good finish and does a great job with spices. Get it if you want a solid smaller-ish mortar and pestle.

Beautiful little mortar
I bought this for my college apartment since my mom gave the family one to my brother. the cast iron adds a beautiful industrial touch to the space and really gives a heavy, tactile experience to the cooking process. it cleans up easy, just be careful as it is cast iron. try not to use too much soap or soak it!

very small but works well!
Works Great! We have used it for spices and pills. NO worries about Bumping them together to get the pills broken so they can be ground. (I never remember if the grinder or the bowl is the Mortar or the Pestle) Very pleased. I gave away the beautiful stone one because little bits of stone were not what i like in my meals.

Nice, heavy, but performs just ok.
Looks pretty, the weight is nice to let it do much of the grinding. When trying to crush things such as peppercorns I find it easier to just push straight down, not the most useful. Much of the spice does end up in a ring where the matched surfaces of the mortar and pestle are not aligned, this leaves me shaking it often to get a good grind which is why I can’t give it great rating. If you are using this on a nice surface, put something under it, it is cast iron so it will scratch things. It is also cast iron, so the nice deep black patina will wear off leaving shiny iron behind. Drying well after cleaning is a must, it is designed to be bare iron. A light oiling when not in use for awhile has kept it from rusting.

Do not buy!
I have barely used, I spent a day seasoning it and tried to get the black stuff out with grinding salt. I used it for large amounts salt or pepper also dry herbs. I just recently realized it had rusted and shouldn’t be this cannot be real cast iron. I love cast iron but regret this purchase. Its really heavy and my small hands can’t even hold the thing while grinding, it hurts to hold. Do not buy!!!!

My new favorite!
I've got marble, porcelain and a steel alloys but this is my favorite. Also by far the most durable of my collection. I do wish that it was smoother inside and on mine the way that the pestle fits the mortar leaves a very slight gap when the bowl is angled which has lead to me adapting and grinding somewhat differently and shifting the contents a little more than with my others. That being said it does an Excellent job. Thanks to my cousin's curiosity, I even tried making rice flour with it. It worked and worked well! I think however I'll stick to using a blender for rice flour. Lol This for everything else.

Probably the best I've found
I've had/used a few before this and the cast iron is the best. Solid. Easy to season and use. Crushed dry rice with zero effort on test run.

Handle Extension Needed
It is what you see, however the wee handle is insufficient for such a heavy tool and means that you'll be stuck using just a couple fingers to hold it, causing your wrists to hurt after mere minutes of use. I like it otherwise so I may try to extend the handle somehow, perhaps by drilling and tapping a sizable hole at the top in order to secure a short piece of all-thread which could then be wrapped in more material until it matches the circumference of its existing handle. An improvement which will also make it into quite a weapon in a pinch.
