Poems from Greek Antiquity

An Absolutely Vital Book for Anyone Interested in Poetry
This book is superb. The poems, apart from standing up so magnificently in their own right, show us how they informed later periods of English poetry, often translated by such giants as Milton and Shelley themselves. There's an awful lot in this little book and I am so glad that I bought it.

Beautiful, but if looking for a good Sappho collection, look elsewhere.
Beautiful edition of a lot of obscure poems from a fascinating age in western civilization. The cover and binding are beautiful, of course, and the pages feel great and the ink is clear.I haven’t had to get a chance to look at a huge amount yet, but I did look at the translation of my favorite fragment by Sappho, Frag. 31. I have to say, I really dislike the translation they used for Sappho! The translation they used does not convey the madness of Eros, and it’s comical with it’s rhythm and rhyme. I really wish they had tried to obtain the rights to Anne Carson’s masterful translation of Sappho in her essay “Eros the Bittersweet”.Other than that, it seems to be fun and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of it
