is there an effective way to measure cuts using the imperial system instead of metric?

The best way I have found two make exact measurements every time is to go to the hardware store and by $0.10 washers and use them as spacers between the bearings. Then I'll write down measurements like three bearings and three washers equals a 1 and 1/4 inch belt and so on. This way it's exact every time and quick to set up

How thin can you cut lace for braiding?

This is a great tool, it will easily cut .25" . The thinner and softer the leather the slower one must work and the blade absolutely has to be sharp. after one gets the hang of it 3/32-1/16 is not out of the question. But there is a learning curve. BTW I would buy another but I doubt I'll ever need to, as it is built like a tank

How well will this work on soft, flexible leather, such as suede?

It cuts a nice strap if you lower the bearings so the leather cant roll.

Can you cut fabric with this?

I would think there are much better tools (like scissors!) for cutting fabric! The main problem is that you cut leather with this tool by pulling it across a razor blade. Pulling fabric across a razor blade wouldn't produce a nice clean cut, and, you can see from the photos that the edge of the leather goes up against the vertical metal piece to keep the width of the cut strip the same along the belt length - I doubt that fabric would have the rigidity to perform in this same way, resulting in a cut strip that varies in width along the length of the strip.
