A Marvellous but Limited Device: An In-Depth Review of the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor
The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor is a rather marvellous device that I recently purchased to integrate with my home ventilation system. I was looking for a way to keep an eye on the air quality in my home and this device seemed like the perfect solution. While I do believe that the monitor itself is a great piece of kit, it is unfortunately rather limited by the Alexa ecosystem. There are many options to set up Alexa routines using various measured parameters, but these routines frequently do not run when they're meant to, even though the air quality has changed below or above a defined threshold. The built-in routines to alert an associated Alexa speaker when the air quality has changed to poor do seem to be working reliably, but custom routines can be a bit hit and miss. Furthermore, there is no official way to integrate this device with other home automation systems such as Home Assistant, which would make it much more versatile and popular. Additionally, the device takes a bit of time to boot up when first plugged in and some of the readings, such as VOCs, can be a bit confusing to interpret. Finally, it's a shame that the Alexa app requires quite a bit of navigation to see the air quality and that there is no option to use an Echo with a display to show the air quality as one of the slides. Despite these niggles, I do think that the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor is a decent option, especially if you are simply looking for something to check the air quality in your home and be alerted when it changes to poor. It is perhaps a bit pricey, especially if you need a few of these devices, but considering the alternatives on the market, it does seem like a good choice. Fun fact: this device is quite an eye-opener when it comes to the air quality in your kitchen when cooking, even on an electric stove! All in all, I would say that this device is a rather clever and useful piece of kit, even if it does have a few limitations.

Great Monitor
Its nice to know how the air quality is in various places. This is so easy to set up and works with Alexa. You get a decent account of how the air quality and as I suffer from Asthma its always good to have more knowledge of whats going on around you. Overall its a fantastic piece of Tech.

Excellent for smart homes, but hard to justify at full price
I bought these Amazon smart air quality monitors as part of a wider smart home setup, and used properly, they do exactly what you’d expect them to do. They work particularly well if you already have smart devices in place. I’ve set mine up so that when air quality drops, my air purifiers automatically turn on, and the same applies to humidity changes. In that context, they’re genuinely useful. They quietly monitor in the background and trigger actions without needing constant attention, which is exactly what you want from this kind of device. Another great point is you get really good app integration to display metrics over time and very detailed at that. Setup was straightforward and the units themselves are compact and discreet. Once configured, they’ve been reliable and consistent, and I don’t find myself having to check or fiddle with them. My main frustration is with the power connection. They use a USB Micro cable, which feels dated now. USB-C would have made far more sense, especially as many people already have spare cables. The supplied cable is also black, which looks a bit out of place against the white units. It’s a small detail, but in a device designed to be visible in living spaces, it does matter. Price is the other big consideration. I bought these on offer for around £30 each during Black Friday, and at that price they feel fair and worthwhile. At the £70 retail price, I personally wouldn’t justify them. They’re good at what they do, but not £70-good unless you’re very invested in the Amazon smart home ecosystem. Overall, these are solid, well-integrated sensors that make sense if you already run a smart home and can pick them up at a discount. At full price, I’d expect more refinement, particularly around design choices like the power cable.

Good device but a pain to see the data
This is smaller than I expected, so it will neatly fit almost anywhere, and it's very simple to set up. An indicator light on the front handily shows you if there are any air quality issues too, but digging down into the issues is not so simple. Really the only way to do it is through the Alexa app, but the layout of that app means it takes at least a few taps to get to, and potentially a bit of scrolling too. Using an Echo Show might be better except - on the latest Echo Show 5 at least - there doesn't seem to be any way to display this at all at the time of writing. That's especially bad since Amazon advertises that you can, and I specifically bought one for that purpose (because the app is so rubbish). So presumably either this will come as a software update (and therefore shouldn't be advertised yet) or it's already an option but is so comically unintuitive that I can't find it despite digging through every menu and trying voice controls. When you do finally get to the details in the app they are at least quite nicely laid out, and come with information on the various things it's detected and on what to do about them. So there's a lot of potential here, but Amazon really needs to make it play better with the app and other hardware.
