Q: Regarding the colors. Does anyone know the laws regarding on which colors are allowed or not when placing these on the roads?

I was a road cop for 20 years. The laws regarding colors apply to lights mounted on moving vehicles only. Permanent or temporary. On top of car, in rear window, on dash, in grill. Spotlights. They do not apply to lights set down on the road. The exception being a white light that can blind oncoming drivers. The "spirit" of the laws is to prevent/punish those who impersonate a emergency vehicle. Ask yourself, have you ever seen an orange, yellow, or white road flare? They're all red. In the USA red is universally recognized as danger/emergency. Yellow/orange as caution. Yes, you will get more lookie-loos but that's the point. People pay attention to the red ones. The yellow/orange ones do not get the same attention. Most will slow way down for red. Not so with yellow/orange. The goal of the red road flares is to keep us from becoming road kill. Surprised someone hasn't come out with a light capable of being set to red or orange/yellow. Orange/yellow is better than nothing.

Q: How many LEDs are in each light? Do they point upwards or sideways?

They point upwards. I think they have one LED in each light. They are very bright; don't worry about that part. The only issue I have with it is durability since one of my three lights was corroded by the battery. Although in my state it gets very cold. (Midwest)

Q: Are batteries included?

As I recall batteries are NOT included. I just ordered 'Amazon' branded batteries when I ordered the FlareAlert. Uses AAA batteries, 3ea, in each unit.

Q: How long do batteries last in the unit and unused?

Great question. I've had mine going on 2 and half years, and the batteries all tested "OK". Not great and not dead. I've had to use them a few time over those years. So awhile. If you don't have a road flare or another type of accident avoidance I suggest these.
