Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) Magnetic Travel Board Game Set

I have for the longest time wanted to play Xiangqi. I am a huge fan of the game as a whole and am beginning to understand the game a little more. The set here is well worth the price and was packaged nicely. Though other reviewers mentioned it had not instructional booklet I found that it had one. I would like to correct one small mistake made in it though that YMI seems to make in its description of the game. If a person perpetually checks or chases their enemies pieces unless they break the cycle the checker not the checked person forfeits the game. This is a huge distinction and is more than likely a small translation error, I assume. Save that the pieces are quite pretty and stored well. The magnet is a little weak overall yet still holds the pieces to the board. For its price it is a complete steal, also look up the Jade set by YMI if you would like a higher quality Xiangqi set that is also magnetic.

The 9.5" set seems mostly fine for its price. Some things I don't like: 1. The hinges are pieces of flexible plastic that fold over 180 degrees. This does not seem particularly durable to me, and I expect that they eventually they will fatigue and break after repeated opening/closing. I am surprised that it does not instead use mechanical hinges that are held together with metal pins or plastic pegs. 2. It is slightly annoying that the "squares" on the board are rectangles and not squares. This makes the movements of the elephants and horses feel a bit weird, especially for beginners.

I ran a boba shop in Texas, and I bought 4 set of this Chess. The quality perhaps is the best bang for your bucks in term of design, portable, size and etc... It can be fold in half and easy to put them away. Unfortunately, not all American kids know how to play this Chinese Chess, so I bought another 4 set of Inflatable Bouncer #1 Rated and Cutest Bouncy Seat for kids on Amazon so they race with each other. Best investment ever for my boba shop.

Arrived quickly and packaged well. Item is just as presented in the photos and is actually much nicer than I expected for the price. The little booklet that comes with it describing how to play the game is well written and concise.

This is a very good quality magnetic set. The surface is a metal printed surface that has the color of blond wood as shown in the picture. The pieces have very easy to recognize don't. The plastic of the board body itself is strong and sturdy. The dimensions of the board and the chess chips are exactly as they are on official bigger boards. And in my opinion this one has the best, easiest to read and to look at color scheme. One very excellent aspect of this set that can rally help any beginner is that the back side of the pieces doesn't have velcrow and is smooth. You can take a sticker of paper apply it on the back side and draw an outline of western chess pieces or whatever piece graphic you want. This is a suggestion only. I am not responsible if then you smear the surface of the board or do it wrong. But for me as someone who wants to teach their friends to play it is very helpful. It takes people awhile to get used to the Chinese characters for all the pieces. But with western chess outlines it will be intuitive. Note: the set doesn't come with instructions. But it would be stupid to expect it to come with thorough instructions on how to play when all of it is available online and on YouTube.

As a complete novice in Chinese Chess, I was looking for a good starter set that would allow me to set up puzzles from apps and books and work through these. The set was bigger than expected which is fantastic for being able to differentiate between pieces, but small enough to be easily thrown in a backpack. Quality seems good, no issues at all Definitely recommended for someone getting into the game, or having a spare set for travel etc.
