They exclude extraneous noise mostly by blocking the ears. The front-facing openings are too small to provide useful sound capture and to enhance the high-frequency loss that comes with aging.

Amazing, I didn’t expect these to be so good. I play non amplified flamenco Guitar. obviously the sound goes out forward and away from me. With these in it is a much fuller sound and louder. Similar effect to playing close to a wall, where the sound is reflected back to my ears. I don’t need to sit in front of a wall anymore. These have worked better than I could have every dreamed of. I have also added a thin lanyard so if one drops out of my ear I won’t lose it. I keep looking for where the battery fits lol. Cannot believe these are completely passive.
