does this work for cats?

I don't know. Actually, it stopped working for my dog. She now pushes underneath it and curls up to sleep with it on top of her.

Up to what size sofa will this work on?

The couch defender covers a seating area up to 80 inches long, you can use 2 couch defenders for a large sectional or a couch defender and a chair defender to cover extra long couches

Won't a large (highly intelligent) dog simply pull it off the sofa?

We have Corgi's so not a large dog. You do tuck the ends securely into each end so a bigger dog probably would not pull it off however they lay just jump up on it and collapse it flat. It has effectively kept our dogs off couches.
