Patterns of Fashion 1: Englishwomen's Dresses and Their Construction C. 1660-1860

I was very excited to receive my copy of Patterns of Fashion, Vol I by Janet Arnold. As a Revolutionary War reenactor, my interest in 18th Century clothing is continually deepened by more and more detailed research, and this book is a treasure trove of information. The specific details, such as a discussion of how saque-back gown sleeves were set into the body of a gown, are invaluable insights into garment construction, and equally invaluable how-to aids. Although the book covers a wider range of period garments than just 18th Century clothing, it seems to concentrate on the 18th Century,(at least, that's my perception!) and it's easy to use the book in order to put the Revolutionary War period into perspective in the timeline of fashion. The addition of useful tools such as the metric conversion chart are bonuses.Even if each garment were not charted on a grid, making it possible to draft a pattern, just the discussion of the details of each garment would make the book a must for every seamstress' or shelf. If you can only afford a few books on historic clothing, this one is a must.

I have several Janet Arnold books, 5 to be exact. They are consistently great. This is no exception this being her first Patterns of Fashion dealing with clothing from 18th century. Lots of wonderful references and graphed patterns to scale up. An essential for someone making the clothing from this period in time.

This thing was packaged so well I really wanted to give up on it. They have certain clothes that I loved in here but didn't have a pattern for but that only made me sad for a bit. I didn't really enjoy that they had more 1800 that 1700 clothes in here considering I bought it mainly for that.Is in great shape, normal wear and tear.Love it so far.

I got this as a gift for my girlfriend. She really like the book and uses it constantly. She is going to be going to school for costuming. Theater arts I think it is.

An absolute necessity for your reenactment and/or period costuming needs. There are NO patterns, only diagrams on graph paper so you'll need to enlarge them if you wish to make them up. A little tricky for the novice, but worth the time to work up as they are truly historically accurate.

A fantastic book to learn about how the women were dressed in the very detailed time and in great detail. Highly recommended for those who like fashion and history.---------------Un libro fantastico con el que aprender sobre como vestían las mujeres en la época muy detallada y con todo lujo de detalles. So many questions that I had about garment construction from the time periods that this book covers have been answered!The patterns for construction are drawn on a grid making it very easy to alter them and get them up to size super easy! I can't wait to start my next historical inspired piece.

Das Buch befasst sich ausschließlich mit der Frauenmode innerhalb des Zeitraumes von 1660 bis 1860. Viele detaillierte Zeichnungen zeigen nicht nur die Kleider selbst, sondern auch die verschiedenen Muster. Zu jedem Kleid gibt es Schnittmuster, sowie Angaben über Stoffe und Farben. Das Schnittmustervergrößern ist allerdings nicht ganz einfach und auch die Anleitungen sind für absolute Anfänger wahrscheinlich nicht so leicht zu verstehen. Man muss sich schon etwas Zeit dafür nehmen, vor allem, da alles auf englisch geschrieben ist. Zudem muss man sagen, dass das Buch auf Unterbekleidung, sprich Korsetts usw. nicht weiter eingeht. Auch die Konstruktion von z.B. Krinolinen oder dergleichen wird vernachlässigt. Ich kann es jedoch für alle, die sich für historische Kostüme und Kleider interessieren, nur empfehlen! Ich denke insgesamt stimmen Preis und Leistung hier absolut überein und wer nicht unbedingt eine Riesensumme für Bücher mit historischen Schnittmustern ausgeben will, aber doch etwas möchte, das qualitativ hochwertig ist, ist mit diesem Buch gut beraten.

Das Buch ist super toll. Mit Detail Zeichnungen. Wenn man Schnittmuster vergrößern oder abändern kann, ist das Buch eine wahre Schatztruhe. Man muß nicht einmal Englisch beherrschen, ist natürlich von Vorteil, aber nicht zwingend notwendig. Jeder Fan des 18. Jahrhunderts und der Barock/Rokoko Kostüme sollte es in seinem Bestand führen.

Im Preis-Leistungsverhätnis stets unschlagbar. Viel Wissen was auch dann umgesetzt werden kann. Leider nur in englisch. Die Schneiderkunst sollte beherrscht werden ansonsten "nur" Informativ.

Comme tous les ouvrages de la gamme, ces livres de Janet Arnold sont très complets. Pour chaque période il présente une tenue représentative de l'époque (une tenue tous les 5 ou 10 ans environ) et donne le patron de celle-ci. Le patron est présenté sur un document quadrillé en inches. qui permet de reproduire facilement la tenue à taille réelle. il faut cependant avoir de solides connaissances en couture pour adapter les tenues à votre taille (le patron n'étant pas gradé).
