No its def not soft plush- the head is hard styrofoam...

Is the lion filled with cotton or Styrofoam balls?

My purchased Giant Lion I believe is filled with cotton and I cannot feel any star foam balls inside as the stuffing feels firm, pretty solid, and yet soft. The head is formed by a one or two piece star foam piece so that the head holds its shape. My Lion is very nicely made and looks quite realistic. Do take note that the Lion's mane can be pulled out if a child pulls on it and it did "shed" a bit when first purchased, but I like my Lion!

Big box? Does it come in a big box. What kind of shape was the stuffed animal in when you received it?

My lion came in a large cardboard carton and was in a large plastic bag. It arrived in very good shape and is very realistic looking and well made. Do beware that if young children keep pulling on the lion's mane, some of the hair will come loose which is understandable. I am very pleased with my Giant Lion and it serves mostly as an accent piece, but is played with and hugged by visiting children.
