I like the series
Anna Travis is investigating the murder of up and coming young actress, Amanda Delaney. There is little evidence to go on and the squad seems to stumble along with no real progress. Of course, it is Anna who provides the leads that help solve the case.SILENT SCREAM is Lynda La Plante’s Book 5 of her Anna Travis Mysteries series.SILENT SCREAM is a crime thriller, a suspenseful mystery and a ‘police procedural’.Travis is a very flawed character - a brilliant detective, extremely hard-working - but obsessed with her job. With no family, friends or even close co-workers, her stress levels are off the charts. She can be quite stubborn and impetuous and is haunted by and hounded by ex-lover (and Boss) James Langton. The book is quite detailed, well-organized and suspenseful. I like this series. I just wish I liked the main characters a bit more.

Very Good!
It had been awhile since I had read an Anna Travis novel. So while familiar her, I was not up to date with her history. However, it did not dampen nor interfer with this very good case of police procedural coming through at the end! Our heroine has been promoted but also passed over and her tendency to go off and out on her own causes much distress for her team. Langton appears again in her life bringing back those deep rooted passionate feelings she still has for him. No spoiler here! Fo.r new readers I would suggest starting with some of the earlier cases. Because these are character driven the familiarity makes this very good book even more enjoyable. I wont wait as long to pick up LaPlante/Travis again.

Woo Whoo
I couldn't go to sleep while reading Silent Scream. It is a real page turner. I had to continue with each clue being unturned by Anna Travis following her instincts. Very good book! I want to see the movie.

Huge fan
I'm a huge Lynda LaPlante fan way back to Widows that I saw when visiting London. I've read and seen nearly all of her work. While this novel is not her best that doesn't matter to me; it's still a very good read. She does thorough research and pulls the reader into the story. Some who watched Prime Suspect do not like Anna Travis - it hasn't the same gritty quality - but if you don't try to compare the two women this novel holds up very well.

a good mystery
I like the Anna Travis series. I also like the characters and the way they interact with one another. I am trying to read them in order. It is kind of slow for me (I like James Patterson speed)but it does go into great detail. I had figured out the killer way ahead of time but not why or how.

I love the writing style and find the characters so easy ...
This is the 5th book in the Anna Travis series by author Lynda La Plante.I am really enjoying this series and intend to read all the other books asap. I love the writing style and find the characters so easy to imagine and come to life in my head. If you intend to read any of these books I would strongly suggest that you read them in order as this will certainly make them far more enjoyable and all the sub plots will make a lot more sense. In this offering a British film star Amanda Delany is found dead in her home, brutally murdered with multiple stabbings. Amanda Delaney was not one for a quiet life and when Anna Travis discovers the truth behind the public image of this successful actress she is shocked. There is a trail of lovers and potential murder suspects who have their own secrets to hide which makes life harder for Anna.Anna's ex lover DCI James Langton is a hard task master and with Anna having promotion to Chief Inspector within her grasp she is eager to succeed.Lynda La Plante's writing in this series is not rushed and allows the reader to fully understand the emotions and difficulties facing Anna Travis. This makes the characters stronger and more realistic, but I can see how other readers may feel the books need a good editing. In my case I am happy to read 500 page novels and with every book I read in this series I feel a better understanding and get fully emerged in the characters. Great books and wonderful characters.

Yes.well...
I have to admit that I bought this book because I'd seen the first TV episode adaptation and could not believe how little I knew at the end of the first part of a 3 part series and that made me think that perhaps the TV production company had decimated the book....so I thought I'd read it and see.I was wrong. They hadn't decimated it at all,in fact if you come to the book following the TV series prepare for a disappointment because they worked wonders with what is a very poor effort and in fact improved it immeasurably in storyline and characterisation.Put simply, this book is a good 150 pages too long...it feels as if it's aimed at a teenage market in tone and language somehow (another reviewer explains that beautifully elsewhere in this thread.) If I didn't know who the author was I'd guess it was a newcomer whose editor was letting a youngster loose with the first crime novel. The next to last paragraph, for me was laugh out loud funny....a totally wrong reaction I'm sure but when LaPlante is telling us that Anna has just been told that her 'crush/passion' has both refused her himself and lost her,her dream promotion all she does is say the equivalent of 'I'll show em' in a totally Famous Five,Enid Blyton style.Don't misunderstand me...it is not unreadable...but don't expect a mature, adult crime thriller because it is none of those things. It's a read in bed and fall asleep book....it will not keep you awake because you need to know what comes next, you may not really care.

Better than books 3 & 4 but........
Having read the 4 previous books I found this one better that books 3 & 4 but still didn’t live up to books 1 & 2. It is difficult to find much to like about Anna and increasingly empathise with the secondary characters in the team. As a huge fan of female police procedurals, it’s hugely disappointing that i struggle to find any redeeming qualities that enable me to really get behind her as she just comes across as arrogant, spoiled and self-serving.
