Review: I am gradually reading everything that Freeman Patterson has written. Every book is a joy to read because every book contains new insights that make photography fun. Review: From early-ish in Freeman Patterson's series of photography-instruction books, this like many others is fantastic. Mr. Patterson advocates having good equipment and knowing intimately how to use it, but you won't find any technical detail in this book beyond that. He focusses on composition and light (and what I might call "spark"), so that involves aperture and shutter speed, but beyond that it's all about the art - as it should be. This book was one of my inspirations years ago, when photo magazines were replete with articles about the latest camera's features and which lens had how many lines-per-inch. Those things matter but it's an appreciation for the craft which will elevate your pictures beyond the mundane, and you will certainly find that elevation here.

I first read this book (not to be confused with the simplistic book by Kodak of the same name) well over 35 years ago and it influenced me tremendously - to the point that when Freeman Patterson came to Los Angeles (where I was then living) I went to two of his lectures, which were equally memorable. The author explains things clearly and easily but never over-simplifies. He gives specific examples illustrated with his own images and sets guidelines and principles without becoming dogmatic. The book is, however, almost 40 years old and written before the digital era so you may wish to skip the section on choosing films, although it remains interesting on its own terms even today. I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough - to the point that I ordered a copy for my nephew who is a photographer and he also enjoyed it thoroughly.

Freeman Patterson's first book redone. While Freeman Patterson is a "local to me" author and I may be a bit biased because of that, the book is still indeed great! Freeman Patterson is a world renowned photographer and a great writer as well. I would however hold off buying this to buy his 3rd edition which he co-wrote with Andre Gallant as it covers digital photography as well.
