An excellent crime book.
This was a very satisfying read. The story was well paced with the return of a character I rather liked, but probably shouldn't have, from a previous book in the series. I was so pleased that the ongoing personal story (threaded through every book in the series so far) finally came to some sort of resolution. The investigative threads of the crimes in this book also came together really well. My favourite book in the series so far.

Couldn't finish this with all the will available
I have read other books by Peter James that were not difficult-the sort I buy to carry on my kindle when travelling. This one was impossible to like-none of the characters were anything but self serving and the back and forth (so popular now) between characters had no thread of continuity, just the next plot piece. I felt I had wasted even the small amount I paid. There are so many excellent British crime writers, but something has gone wrong with Mr. James processes.

Roy Grace at his best!
Just finished "Love You Dead" and it was well worth the time spent reading. I liked Peter James' development of the characters-not just Roy Grace but the other officers on his team , even his unpleasant superior, and the villains in the novel. I also enjoyed the "trip" to Brighton and surrounding area that I took vicariously by reading "Love You Dead". I've now read all 12 in the Roy Grace series-and enjoyed each one. They are probably best enjoyed when read in order-so to appreciate the development of the various characters in the series. Thank You Peter James- hope to read another Roy Grace novel some time in the not too distant future.

Try Mr. James if you like.....
Peter James' writing has grown on me. I love British writers and are often hard to find. I do love Amazon's listing of "If you like.. you may like" listings. They are quite helpful. You have to do a little digging, and occasionally you can try a freebie, but I have to say I think he's every bit as good as Elizabeth George, Deborah Crombie, and Stephen Booth, my other favorites. I recommend him if you like those other three, I truly believe you will enjoy Mr. James.

Amazing and talented author
If you have not read the Roy Grace series you are truly missing out. Each book will grip you and leave you wanting more. I have said this installment was my favorite only to learn I loved the next even better. I have just one left to read, and it makes me sad to know the adventure will end. I can only hope Peter James will write more in the near future.

A GREAT series!
This is such a fulfilling and enjoyable series. It is really important to start at the first series as there's a secondary mystery involving Roy Grace's first wife that is like a ghost in all of his books. There is resolution and it is helpful if you read them in order. You won't be disappointed. If you have enjoyed the series Broadchurch or even Wire in the Blood, you will enjoy these books. HIGHLY recommended.

Beware, Echis Carinatus in the grass!
Hugely entertaining and more than a little informative, Peter James has surpassed himself in this latest Roy Grace saga. I couldn't put the book down and was sorry to finish it. As an ex cop, I just love the realism, not to mention humour he brings to the characters! His grip on the politics of policing is spot on and adds to the drama. If you haven't read him yet (Peter James), here is a great place to start! His links to previous novels are excellent and as a result I re read all the rest of the series (well a few anyway) to pass the time until the next one comes out!

Brighton produces a serial killer
I was totally involved with the narrative. I know the locations and could follow the action easily. Many interesting twists, turns, and dead ends. An (almost) successful conclusion. If I had a negative it was the ongoing 'back story' with some unlikely coincidents. But I guess even police officers can have muddied personal lives. All in all a very interesting story. I'm sure I know some of the characters!

Disappointing
I have read all the previous books in this Roy Grace series, and have enjoyed them very much, though I feel that the author has started to become too descriptive of even the most mundane things. However I found this book too silly to be believable, and some of the things included were obviously slotted in just to fill up the storyline. And we were expected to believe some fairly daft things. The killer from the previous book managed to escape from an underground roof collapse, and then again from a jail. The hit man from a previous book turned up again even though he had previously been believed driwned. And we are supposed to believe that Potting, slovenly, boring, rude and crude is actually a trained undercover agent and can pass as a well-dressed, well-spoken billionaire. Still it fitted in with the story, so it doesn't matter how silly it is does it. All very disappointing.

A certain "je ne sais quoi".
P.J. has a certain "Je ne sais quoi" in his writing style. Yes there are certain errors and some holes here and there but I find his writing style is one that I come back to again and again in spite of any idiosyncrasies I may find. So this is yet another story from P.J.'s mind in which Roy is in another stage of his life. Initially quite blissful in his private life to the point when he almost dreads something happening which might spoil it. Well read on!I notice quite a number of reviewers say this doesn't feel like a typical Roy Grace book. I know what they mean, though personally I liked this change. It was refreshing. This story is quite dramatic. Yes it is exaggerated somewhat (which of his novels isn't?). SPOILER ALERT so at last the "Sandy strand" of the story is tied off. Only to produce a different strand which springs from it. And hey this may well spoil the idyllic rural life Roy and Cleo are enjoying right now. But that will occur in a different story in the future no doubt. I for one will keep reading and follow the new strands in future novels.

Churner
A huge disappointment. I have loved the previous Roy Grace books but this one has all the hallmarks of a 'churner'. The plot was ludicrous and, at times, just plain stupid. Some blatant inaccuracies; the villain travels with hand baggage only but managed to fly transatlantic with his favourite Swiss Army knife? The ending was a hurried -and convenient- tying up of loose ends. And .. where was Roy throughout this tedious ramble? I feel that Peter James has been conning his readers on this one and should feel ashamed. Will I read # 13? Maybe in the hope that it reverts to the enjoyable format of the previous books.

Another great book from Peter James
I have read all of Peter James' Roy Grace series and enjoyed every one of them and this was no exception. All through the series, the disappearance of Grace's wife Sandy has been a dark cloud hanging over the Detective Superintendent and finally in this book the mystery surrounding her disappearance draws to a conclusion. Roy is under a lot of pressure at work with his boss breathing down his neck and a difficult case to solve and sleepless nights due to baby Noah aren't helping matters. It appears that Brighton may have a 'Black Widow' who is targeting elderly rich men and old protagonists too appear to be back on the scene. As usual Peter James' detail to police procedure and crime solving in austerity Britain made it an engrossing read which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Annoying couldn't wait to finish this book.
Roy Grace seems to sit back and events just unfold around him. French police who let a serial killer escape? A murderess who seems to find willing victims within days, and kills also within days. A policeman who drinks heavily whilst working and puts his life in danger. Venom put in a syringe but then victim stabbed with snake's fang. Even at the very end someone knows someone who knew the assassin and knew about his dog, the world is not that small. Also fuss about a goldfish and I get annoyed when authors write about burying things under trees. I can't dig two inches under my trees due to roots! I felt this book was written quickly with as much unbelievable storylines added to pad it out as possible.
