Are the lids stainless steel?

No the lids are made of what appears to be aluminum, very thin and weak metal. When I screw the lid on it doesn’t thread with the glass and pops off again. Sending back. Poorly made.

Does salt get stuck in the the lid, making it difficult to unscrew the top when it is time to refill?

YES! I've had them for a few days, and already salt and pepper get caught in the grooves where the lid screws on. When I unscrewed the lid to the pepper, there was pepper everywhere in the grooves, and it was a mess. I am really disappointed.

Are they really almost 6" tall?

Yes, they are average salt & pepper shakers. They are very nice and hold a decent amount.

Can I buy just the tops?

Probably, but they wear out so fast. I don’t know why you would want to.
