this emits no mist - it absorbs the essential oil and gently releases the aroma back into the air. Be sure to keep the wooden plate underneath, tho. I love this!!!!

Yes, I always use oils that are similar but not the same and I have been using mine for months. I would not use anything with a very strong obvious smell like tea tree but I use lavender, chamomile and relaxing blends. Mine has been in pretty much constant use for several months. I really like it.

Could I use this in my shower?

I don't think it would work well.
