The sound and lighting will turn off together. You can't have one without the other.

What is the best way to get the excess string off the material without damaging it or the saber

You can burn the threads off with a match. It will seal them and keep them from fraying further. Be careful not to burn the fabric though.

If I buy just another saber (Just the blade) can I change the color?

Im not 100 on this, but I don’t think so. The sabers sold at Disney allow you to change kyber crystals do those are color interchangeable.
