Exactly how does this go in? I read in the manual that grey strip goes away from the operator but that seems opposite of air flow.

For anyone who lost their manual like I did, see page 18 of this one: http://c.searspartsdirect.com/mmh/lis_pdf/OWNM/L0908343.pdf. Since this is an exhaust filter, the arrows on the filter should point to the back of the vacuum.

Is this a Kenmore Hepa media filter EF-1 model 86889 #40324?

Everything up to the #40324 is true, and whether that number is the new replacement part at Sears I can't say for sure. But my old filter had the "Model #86889" number printed on it and the filter did too. The package wrapper stated "Designed to fit KENMORE EF-1" and "Sold by Sears".The filters were IDENTICAL but for the dirt on the old one. The Sears store replacement was 4 times as much so I figured I had little to lose trying it, and very glad I did.
