Can this drain the car battery over time?

That's very odd - we've had this on our Lexus for over 8 or 9 months with absolutely no problem. I imagine if you don't drive the car though, it could possibly happen.

Is one device enough to keep rats away under the hood? My street is having a problem with so many rats and I’m afraid it will happen to my car again.

I have a large truck and am out in the middle of nowhere, so I have two of them: one on either side of the engine compartment, and I have a 10 watt solar panel attached to keep my engine battery from draining and shutting the devices off at 10.5 bolts. I also have a deep cycle battery as my starting battery, so that IF the battery gets down to 10.5 because I haven’t driven my truck often enough, then I won’t damage my engine battery. If I don’t plan on using the truck die a week or longer than I attach a trickle charger so the battery stays charged and the devices work 100% of the time.

Does the ultrasound extend beyond the car if the hood is closed? Can humans hear it outside the car?

I've read other reviews that mention they could here the device. I cannot hear it in any way. I have it installed in two different vehicles and not only have we not had any evidence of rodent activity under the hood but we have not evidence in the vehicles either. One in particular was a rodent magnet and so far, knock of wood, nothing. We are very pleased.

Does it repells ants and spiders too?

No, it does not repel ants, spiders or other insects. It works on rodents.
