We're in Alaska & its Perfect for your pantry.
We live in SE Alaska - OffGrid- & on a remote island. All of our groceries and supplies are brought in by float plane. Sometimes planes are delayed up to 45 days due to weather. We love sour cream. 😍 So decided why not try this, as it's shelf stable, until you make a batch. It mixes right into sour cream. Literally add water and that's it. The texture is awesome. We used to have a dairy farm in VA, we know milk & creams. 😅 And this tastes almost like the sour cream I used to make back on our dairy for our customers. We've been making small batches so as not to have an abundance go bad.. I cannot speak to the shelf life of it once it's made, as we've been eating it within 7 days.

Surprisingly tasty
The product reconstitutes swell and has a nice flavor. I was pleasantly surprised. Looking forward to using it on my next Backcountry paddle.

Decent Sour cream
The ratio of 2 water parts powder to 1 parts resulted in a thicker product. A better ratio seems to be 2 parts powder to1 and 1/4 (scant) water. It improves with time in the refrigerator. As a dip, probably not as good as dairy. Do not know if it is satisfactory for cooking. This is rather expensive, need to factor in convenience and less chance for waste.

Bought to try — surprisingly good in sauces, stews, soups…
I can’t see this working as a chip-dip base. Experiments continue. My guess is that, as with powdered butter, small fractions of powdered milk is used as an anti-caking agent. This because the flavor is not as intense as you might hope. I am guessing that the lactic acids are diluted. I will buy again. I wonder if I could get good tang results in a stroganoff if I chested with a bit of cream of tartar…

Glad I found this! Closest to what I grew up on. Could only find sweet buttermilk.

Having sour cream always on hand is convenient but taste isn't great
Many times I have not made something because I did not have sour cream. Something that is shelf stable like this presents the ability to always have sour cream available. But the taste leaves a lot to be desired. If it's cooked in something, it works fine, but as a topping, you're better off without it.

Handy to have on hand and prevents waste.
This is a great thing to have on hand as I usually end up throwing the rest of the sour cream away. Very handy!
