I see some references below of differences in the quality of the construction. Did the thickness or material change?

Will this work if my vent has a mesh cover on it?

It depends on your mesh cover. In our offices, there is a metal mesh grill over top of the vent that hangs about 1/4 inch below the vent and railings. We installed the vent cover behind this mesh cover. This doesn't allow ease of opening and closing on the fly but the vent cover has been effective at reducing the air flow issues for which we purchase the vent cover. Since the metal mesh grill flips out, we just flip it open to adjust if the conditions change.

I am an hvac engineer. did you realize using this product will cause discomfort in the space installed as well as all other rooms on the system?

It improves my space tremendously because the HVAC people in their wisdom didn’t give my office an independent thermostat and damper when they built it. I am no longer at the whim of other people who control the thermostat for the zone. As for other offices, I am aware of the airflow impact and do not care. They don’t want me to use it, then design a better system for my space. It’s a bandaid solution but it does solve specific problems. I’m thrilled with mine, and the service guys in my building don’t care. YMMV.

Do these vent covers seem to help diffuse sound?

No. It’s purpose is to reduce airflow. Very useful if you have cold or hot air beating down on your head and you don’t have control of the office thermostat. But look elsewhere if you need to mitigate sound. You would need some kind of acoustic baffle for that.
