will these work for standard spin bikes in gyms?

These straps need four holes in the pedals to pass the straps through. It is difficult to find pedals they work on. I thought they might work on my pedals and they don't. I may buy some pedals that the straps would go through. Basically you would have to examine the pedals on the bikes in the gym to see.

Are they compatible with any bike pedals?

They will work with most any type of bike petal. Sometimes you have to weave the material through the holes to get it to stay. But it will work. The bigger issue is getting your feet out. The floppy material makes it difficult to mount and dismount.

Are they easy to install? Do I need tools?

They are very easy to install. They loop through your bike pedals and close with Velcro. You don’t need any tools.
