Q: what country is this made in?

"Assembled in China" + "Designed by Bodum in Switzerland" — from the bottom of the kettle and base.

Q: I just received this as a gift and I can’t get it to work- I put it on the base and the light comes on when I flip the switch, but it never heats up?

It should heat up once the blue light comes on when you press down the switch. If it is not it is a bummed one that you got. I would exchange for a working one with Amazon. Had mines few months still works good.

Q: Does this have the dry heat protection?(auto shut off with no water)

Yes, the user manual says there is boil-dry protection. Also, on that note, it says not to boil dry or the stainless may discolor in the boil chamber. It also has auto shut off at boil point which works very well. A very nice kettle, I would recommend.
