It's out of date...

Unless one has their head in the sand, one will know most of the facts in this book. It is packed full of numbers, charts, dates, etc., but since it was written in 1997, these "facts" are no longer relevant. An example would be the huge recession, stock market crash and unemployment numbers, which they do not predict. It does, however, talk about immigration, the global economy, trade embargoes, and the need for a revamped educational system. And that alone is worth the read. It explains the need for mandated educated and vocationally trained immigrants entering our country; but with thousands entering illegally, how can we control that?If one has a child graduating from high school, it is especially pertinent, as it explains the need for skilled/trained/educated workers in the next decades.

2020 review

Book was printed in 1995 and is very outdated and is past due for an update. I bought this book because it was required for a class. Even my professor thinks it is way outdated. If you're not required to purchase this book I would say you could make better use of your money.

Amazing Book

I enjoyed reading this book. In the first chapter, the authors discuss the forces that are shaping the future of American economy. These forces include rapid technological change, globalization of the U.S. economy, rapid economic growth for developing nations, deregulation and liberalization, demographic change, and the aging of baby boomers. In the second chapter, the authors discuss the changes in work, compensation, and occupations. They believe that technological innovations are the main force that changed the nature of America's work and workplaces. The most significant change will be the gender shift in the workplace. In chapter three, the authors discuss three significant changes in the workforce. They believe that the workforce will no longer be "aging" because many workers, who were born during the baby boomer generation, will be retiring, and they will be replaced by a smaller of "baby busters" generation. Gender and ethics will continue to shift gradually. By 2020, about the half of the total workforce will be comprised of women. White non-Hispanic will represent 68% of the workforce, 14% will be for Hispanics, 6% percent will be for Asian, and 11% for black. In chapter four, the authors summarize the important issues that are related to the American workforce future and provide four steps that help to overcome the future challenges. The first step is to understand the future challenges. Second, there is a need for expanding the pool of workers by activities such as encouraging the self-employed, home, and online jobs. The third step, which is the most obvious route to alleviating an impending labor shortage, is increasing workforce participation. Policymakers should make work attractive. The last step is providing job training and education to produce enough workers to fill the available opportunities and to decentralize local enterprise.
