Wonderland Creek: (Great Depression-Era Women's Fiction)

What a wonderful story!
I read Wonderland Creek wishing I was there. The characters came alive with emotions, actions, humor and drive. I read a lot and Wonderland Creek is truly the best I've read since To Kill a Mockingbird, and that's been a lot of decades. I'm familiar with Missouri Ozarks. The generations' grudge shown here exists elsewhere. The graveyard with tended and untended graves can be found in rural areas everywhere. This story is believable because it's real. Even the love potion is real, and I think I know the ingredients. I'm sure you will, too, when you've read the book.

Adventure
Reading about Alice and her adventures will resonate with anybody who has ever had their life turned upside down by unexpected plans. It is a testimony to how God uses difficult times and pushing us out of our comfort zone to hone and shape our character to produce the fruit He desires to see in us. Alice and her friends at Wonderland Creek will show you how it’s done.

A thoroughly enjoyable read
Have read many of Lynn Austin’s books. This book was particularly enjoyable and I didn’t want it to end.. Ms. Austin writes with a combination of humor and spiritual references which I personally love. Yes it is a love story but the depth of the characters and the beautiful way the story is told, never feels predictable. All and all a great book, highly recommend.

The narrative of her life becomes a plot no one would believe
The losses of the Great Depression trickle through the classes of society, but until she arrives in Acorn, Kentucky, librarian Alice Ripley has lived in the fictional world of books. By bringing five boxes of donated books to the small, mountain, coal town, and volunteering as a temporary librarian, Alice discovers a world of tough and enduring people as they struggle to survive in a community torn apart by a closed mine, a family feud, and the rumor of buried treasure. The narrative of her life becomes a plot that no one would believe if written in a book when she meets Lillie and Mack and is drawn into the investigation of a mining conditions and a suspicious accident that killed a miner. Lynn Austin did a great job of gradually revealing the layers of the characters and creating a plot with many twists and turns and surprises, along with suspense and romance. I especially liked how Alice changes when she discovers purpose for her life and a faithful God she can depend on.

Slow paced
Good story overall but the pace was too slow, and some obvios points laboured. Other civil war novels by Lynn Austin are much more captivating.

Great!
Enjoyed this book immensely, you can just imagine yourself being among all these people in this little village in the middle of nowhere. I love books myself so can understand the love of books the main character has, lovely life lessons in it as well.
